December News & Updates

Well who would have thought where we would still be in December from the start of the year eh ?

Its' still quite surreal to find ourselves still to be closed in the run up to Santa's time to empty his sack and as we welcome in a New Year Dreadnought style.

With the rollercoaster of a year many have faced we are just grateful that we are in a decent position that we could weather the last couple of months of uncertainty and what now looks like a rocky month ahead for sure. Earlier in the year it looked like it could be the end of the road.

Determination from the Rock Crew and shear will to ensure the music won't be stopping anytime soon along with some fantastic support and funding has been the key in the last 6 months to our survival. Again thanks to all who have helped. It has been an almighty achievement.

Keep your spirits up whether it's Vodka or Jack Daniels as we will be back in 2021.

On behalf of ALL THE ROCK CREW we wish you and your families a great Christmas and a Happy New Year however you are spending it.

There is a few bit of news to spread as well :

Club Merch - ALL orders have been shipped and picked up now in time for the Festive Break. The online store will remain open and if we have the size, colour and design in stock will arrange a shipping. Picking up at the club can only happen when lockdoon 3 has ended in mid January so please bear that in mind. We will inform you it's in or out of stock when an order comes in. IF it's out of stock then please be patient as our supplier is facing the same issues of being closed in tier 4 restrictions.

Many thanks to all who have purchased something. Every penny and pound of income from this helps keep the bills paid.

Future Events - Guidance has been published now from Scot Gov that gives us an idea of what restrictions and limitations will need to be adhered to when we get to TIER 1. As we have mentioned all thro the year when we can and are allowed to re-open the live side of things certain gigs will be do-able and sadly there will be events that cannot work if restrictions are still in place over numbers and distancing. IF we were allowed to open next week for example we would have to set tables up for groups to a max of 6 with a 2m distance to another group/table. This will give us the ability to seat approx 50-60 people at a gig downstairs. The band would also have to be able to socially distance from each other on stage if they are not a professional outfit in their own bubble.

Just these two things as you might now start to see are going to dictate what can be done, never mind the remainder or guidance we will have to ask you to follow. It's not going to be an easy one but in time these restrictions hopefully will recede and we will be back to something that resembles some normality when ever that will be. So as per 2020 we will look at each event coming up and look what can be done.

Some events may well be able to go ahead as planned while others will be postponed further into 2021. With one event already moved into 2022 we would still urge you to consider buying a ticket. I know that's a big ask but we are still trying to stay positive that things will get going again. As in the past apathy and reluctance to commit in advance to things will be equally impactful to the live sector as covid has been, so the time to support your local venue will soon be here and very much required.

SAVE OUR VENUES T-SHIRTS - I know the campaign T-Shirts are already out there to people who asked for one during our campaign. It's not something we can keep track of directly as they are coming direct from The Music Venue Trust supplier so would ask if you are still to see yours please drop us a wee message in the New Year to chase it up for you.

That's it for 2020 folks. Lets hope 2021 is a wee bit better for us all.

Mid November updates and news

Well folks it's mid November at the club and although still not able to operate or open there is still plenty happening behind the scenes....there always kinda is.

To all those who generously donated and opted for a #saveourvenues T-Shirts I'll get an update from MVT on their progress soon as they take care of that side of things and ship direct to those who opted for one. It did state on the crowdfunder to allow upto 35 days for delivery as the MVT team are always flat out behind the scenes protecting the Grass Roots Venues some of which are still in danger.

Thankfully with your ongoing support and assistance thro the Scottish and UK Government we have stabilised things.

Wow. I knew it would prove popular but again the level of support and orders you guys have been pumping in via our own website based shopping cart has been just superb. Great to see so many are commenting about the quality thus far and posting up plenty snaps of themselves with their gear on. Many thanks guys. As ever it is very much appreciated as it is now our only source of income.

We are just about upto date with ALL outstanding orders come this weekend as the demand was unexpected. Thanks for your patience. EMAILS will be sent when ready to pick up at the club each Saturday or your tracking reference via our courier.

We are looking at some options for kids now but as many might not appreciate the logos and designs all have to be re-worked size wise to fit the wee people. This is been done and just finalising the colour options but looking at black, red and a nice pink. Now before any the big girls say anything we are looking at an option for the ladies too and some new options to keep things upto date also look at discontinue some designs that haven't proven too popular thus far.

Just a wee final reminder that everything is done to order with very little or no stock held to keep costs down to a bare minimum so please still allow upto 14 days from date of order for production and delivery.

With Christmas fast approaching we will have to put in a cut off date for anyone looking to get a pressie for someone so no one is running about mental or stressed.

A PROVISIONAL DATE of 1st December is looking like it will be the cut off which will give us time to get the items done and out to you before Christmas.

Sadly it now looks like with the TIERED approach and all that is included in those levels we need to be on tier ONE to be able to re-open the live side of things with most likely some kind of restrictions on time and capacity. At the time of writing this and the stubborn levels in West Lothian as Scot Gov put it does have my gut (and yes it's bigger than ever thanks to lockdown) saying that I can't see us being down that low in December to allow any of the pre-planned events to go ahead I'm afraid.

We are still working on a revised date for MAIDEN SCOTLAND from start of October also SIMPLE MINDED and BEYOND JOVI from November. Many want to get a revised date hence why the refunds aren't issued yet or the events cancelled off but is a tricky one for the bands as they all have a massive balancing act with other dates, venues and other projects. IF anyone has lost patience and wishes a refund I fully understand and is not a problem. Email me alanr@dreadnoughtrock.com and will sort that out without any hassle or issue. Thanks again for the support and patience.

SYTERIA and P!NK December events have both been postponed to 2021 now, FIRE EXIT is CANCELLED completely due to other factors as well and THE HOT LOVE event is currently under review too.

So what's next ?  Well I'm optimistic we will get down to a level in the near future - when exactly that will be is unknown and when we get there we will have to sit down and plan what can and cannot be done in respect of who can play safely on the stage and how many can attend. We are looking at things weekly just like Scot Gov and trying to guess when to prepare. Just to manage expectations if we were to get told today that we can re-open tomorrow it will still take a good 10-14 days to get everything back up and running, staff organised, promote and sell tickets and let you know what the procedures and plans will be. Not a flick of the switch by any manner or means.

One thing I do know is we will need everyone to be as positive as they can and support the musicians and venues out there. At the time of writing this it's now been EIGHT MONTHS without a gig at the club. I appreciate many will still be tentative about going out when we can resume live events but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully the train doesn't slow down or stop on the way there this time.

In the meantime we are looking to some artists to come in and record a short set in a covid secure environment. It's a wee bit different to live streams but its how we are deciding to do it as not everyone will be online at 1.30pm in the afternoon for example when we are shooting it plus we want the best product possible for you to see.

We have one done and dusted which will go live this Saturday night (14 Nov) at 8pm with a superb musician JASON SWEENEY. It's the first one and behind the scenes glad we took the recording approach as everything that could go wrong or not work as expected - did.

Our camera system power supplied failed two minutes before starting, My Pc threw the toys out the pram after falling out with the mixing desk and wouldn't talk to each other resulting a PLAN B with DSLR's and Jason nipping home to get some of his recording gear. It was still a laugh and great to just do somethings so hope you enjoy the finished article.

More News and Updates as they come. In the meantime Stay Safe and Stay Positive. We will be back Rocking before you know it.

A Big Thank You

Hi. Douglas Croft Here (old crew will know me as Dougal)

You don’t hear much from me these days as I tend to take a back seat when Alan is controlling the ship, HMS Dreadnought.

I just had to take this opportunity to thank all of our supporters over the last 8 testing months.

The response to our crowdfunding appeal has been overwhelming and the comments left were heart-warming and encouraging to say the least. They made me realise just how much the Dreadnought Rock club has meant to so many of you over the years and how it has affected people’s lives, myself included.

Thank you all so much, although as I have said I am now in the back seat with the well-known Headmaster Alan Russell running the show. This being said, I still have a great deal of input and love being part of our club and to continue my involvement after all these years.

I have been there for over 48 years (I know hard to believe when I look so young) and was responsible for renaming the club Dreadnought Rock after we took over from Studio 4 Discotheques back in 1972.

A lot has happened since.

Over the last 10 years or so The Dreadnought has become a nationally famous live music venue solely down to the hard work of all our staff but mainly due to the input and dedication of one man,  Alan Russell without whom The Dreadnought Rock Club as we know it would have floundered and closed years ago.

Alan and myself plus all the long serving and dedicated DJs, Dougie & Bar Staff ,Door Security ,Sound Engineers ,Bands /Artists, and of course the Cleaners have done so much to keep this such a fantastic music venue.

Hopefully with all the help and support we have had and are still receiving we will get through this pandemic and come out the other side even better than before.

I Know I speak for all of us when I say I can’t wait for the day we get back to presenting some live music and a wee bit of dancing.

(Even if it is to Billys set)

We are heading towards our 50th Anniversary and I am sure we will be back on course to give you a mega party night plus lots and lots of great events on the run up to 2022.

Almost forgot.

My thanks also goes out to:-

The Music Venue Trust.

The Crowdfunding Scheme.

The Scottish & UK Governments.

All or patient Suppliers and especially our property landlord Keith. All of which have helped us greatly.

Somehow the cost of being closed is almost as much as being open.

Hopefully, this will support us sufficiently to survive for a while till the restrictions on music venues and nightclubs are set at a level that allows us to open and operate as close to normal as is possible. This may take some time.  But we will be Back!

Looking forward to having your company for a drink and a chat soon in one of Scotlands longest running and best rock clubs.

Dreadnought Rock.

All the best and stay safe.

Douglas Croft.

PS .Keep buying the Merch   They make great Christmas prezzies.

Anyhoo get over to www.dreadnoughtrock.com for a wee looky.

PS the LIVE CALENDAR will update in due course when I have finger tips back.

Crowdfunder launched 29/9/2020

We embark on something that I truly never thought we would have to do and set up a crowdfunder to help stabilise Scotland's longest running rock clubs and West Lothian's premier Live music venue.

We have asked so much of all those who have came along in the past 4 decades to be at gigs, the nightclub and be there for us just the same as we have for you. This feels different in so many ways as we didn't have a beer, vodka, gig or a damn good rocking to offer in return so asking for direct help is alien to how we have always worked but I'm afraid we have to ask.

Although we were told of emergency funding for Grassroots Live music venues in July with the promise of added support in September for nightclubs we set out our funding applications for the Live music side of things in late August to only cover the live side of the business.
The unfortunately delay in this process meant we would have to wait to 22 Sept for a decision. Thankfully we received news some funding from that was allocated along with many other venues around Scotland from a very over subscribed fund which would be with us by end of September.
When the guidance was laid out for nightclub support on 17 September we found out that if we were successful in gaining vital stabilisation funding for the Live side of things we would not be able to enter into the funding applications for nightclub support.
We either had to withdraw from the Live music fund that was fought for by The Music Venue Trust then effectively gamble all that on an application to a fund that would approximately be taking £100 million in applications with only £15million allocated to those successful.
You can imagine after being told we can get something now that would help plug the gaps of the last six months, we took it even though it would potentially leave a gap in funding plans in the future regardless if a very limited live music service could be brought back online as there is little to no chance of nightclubs being back open under the current situation this year so would have to stretch every penny out even more.

With so many pleading to start a crowdfunder back in April or as they didn't or couldn't come to support us in pub mode along with now this funding shortfall lead us to set it up. At the time of writing this just a few hours in we have exceeded 6% of the whole target which is truly humbling. This very large ask will help us ride out whatever is coming weeks and months down the road and be there for you once more.

Thank you all. https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/dreadnoughtrock
